The problem

Your dog pulls so hard on a flat collar that walks are a wrestling match. A back-clip harness did not help — it just moved the pulling from the neck to the chest. The Gentle Leader works differently: it wraps around the muzzle and redirects the head, so when the dog pulls, their nose turns back towards you instead of powering forward. What tends to help

The strap sits around the muzzle (not a muzzle — the dog can still eat, drink, pant, and bark) and clips under the chin. When the dog pulls, their own forward motion turns their head to the side, which naturally slows them down. The physics work the same way a horse halter does: control the head, control the body. A straight answer: Dogs will paw at it, rub their face on the ground, and generally protest during the first few days. This is normal and does not mean it hurts — it means it feels strange.
